At Lisbon Down Town, in Rua dos Correeiros, I recently found a gathering spot of several "urban tribes" members. It is funny that they are unseen by most tourist going down Rua Augusta or up the Sta. Justa Elevator.
With ages between 15 and 20, Metal to Gothic look and some graffiti fans, all styles gather there to prepare the night to come (it will go on in the Cais do Sodré). Talking is done with great irreverence and... beer "served" in 1 liter bottles.
Needless to say that the visual is a common concern in this group. But the styles are quite heterogeneous. Only originality is a common ground.
The need to belong to a group or a style is a characteristic of the youth. Even from the ones that are running away from main stream. In the end of the day, even those who don't like labels will eventually fall into one!
I asked Irene, one of the girls there on that day:
— Why this place?
— I don't know. She replied.
— This is an old spot. When I started coming here, it already existed.
And no one knows how a simple corner in Rua dos Correeiros became a favorite spot... Go figure!
